Google has managed to dominate just about every field it has entered, online or otherwise. The company has a seemingly magical combination of brilliant employees, funds, and public goodwill. For some reason, however, the search giant has failed, time and time again, to get a good foothold in the world of social networking.

Back in 2004, the company launched Orkut. The site gained a good deal of popularity in India and Brazil (where it is now located), but failed to offer much competition to sites like Facebook and MySpace in other countries, including the U.S. More recently, Google launched Buzz, a Twitter-like site integrated directly into Gmail. That property has generated a good deal of negative press since its inception.

Rumor has it that the company is gearing up for another big push in the space, less than five months after the public launch of Buzz. According to Inside Facebook, three days ago, Digg founder Kevin Rose tweeted, “Ok, umm, huge rumor: Google to launch facebook competitor very soon ‘Google Me,’ very credible source.” That tweet has since disappeared.

All heating up and all I can add is watch this space – I like Orkut, Google Buzz, Picasa and Google Apps, Places +++

World Cup opening day fever pushed the internet to a new record. Traffic to news sites on June 11th reached over 12 million visitors per minute globally. The day’s traffic exceeded the previous record of 8.5 million visitors per minute, which was set when Barack Obama won the U.S. presidential election in 2008.

Three years ago, only 9% of all UK internet time was spent on social networks & blogs (this equates to 1 minute in every 11). Since 2007, this sector has grown and now accounts for nearly 23% of UK internet time – the equivalent of 1 in every 4.5 minutes.

UK internet users now spend 64% more time using search engines (31 million hours per month in April 2010) than they did 3 years ago.

* Getting free placement in Google is easy – you don’t need any kind of software
* All you need is a link from another website to your website
* Google needs to understand it is a full link to include you in it’s database (index) of websites
* You can submit your site to Google, but I think it is pointless – I have never used this method
* Some seo companies charge for ’submission’ to Google and other search engines – I wouldn’t bother
* Be wary – SEO can be a mysterious business – ensure you do not get scammed by unethical seo firms
